Welcome to UT Youth Environment And Health (UT YEAH)
The risk to children's well-being from environmental contaminants is an issue across the United States. Assessing the exposure of children to environmental hazards in facilities where they spend considerable time is of importance for the continued good health of youth in this country. In 2001, the UT Youth Environment And Health (UT YEAH) Research Group formed as a collaborative group with faculty from the UT Extension Family & Consumer Sciences, UT Department of Entomology & Plant Pathology and the UT College of Social Work. The team is concerned with youth health in relation to the natural and built environments, building facilities' management, public health policies and social/child welfare.
The research group is working to educate Tennessee schools, childcare facilities and other child-serving facilities to reduce children's exposure to environmental contaminants. Based upon community assessments and a review of literature, UT YEAH adopted as its first major project to work with schools and childcare centers to reduce children's exposure to pests, pesticides and other chemicals and other indoor air quality pollutants.
Goal
Improve the well-being of Tennessee's children by balancing and reducing risks associated with pests, pesticides, and other chemicals.
Objectives
- Increase understanding and action among local, regional, state and federal stakeholders, with a focus on schools and childcare facilities
- Expand resources for practice, policy and research in Tennessee
- Build a Tennessee-based resource database and Web site
